Solar Farm SCADA
4G Antenna Australia

Every solar and BESS site in Australia uses a 4G cellular modem for SCADA monitoring — Teltonika RUT956, Robustel R5020, Sungrow Logger1000, or Huawei Smart Logger. Metal structures, remote locations, and the 3G shutdown create persistent antenna challenges. This guide covers the correct D&G antenna and cable assembly for every configuration.

Teltonika RUT956SMA Female ×2Yes (MIMO 2×2)Australia's most common solar SCADA router. Two SMA Female ports require two SMA Male cable assemblies for MIMO. Supports Band 28 (700 MHz) — critical for regional AU sites.
Teltonika RUT986SMA Female ×2Yes (MIMO 2×2)Newer RUT956 successor. Same SMA Female dual-port standard. RS232/RS485 serial for Modbus/DNP3 SCADA integration.
Robustel R5020SMA Female ×2Yes (5G MIMO)5G dual-SIM router, common at utility-scale solar. SMA Female ports. Two antennas required for 5G MIMO — D&G supplies matched pairs.
Sungrow Logger1000SMA FemaleSingle portSungrow's solar datalogger with cellular modem. Single SMA Female port for cellular uplink. Direct SMA Male cable assembly to external antenna.
Huawei Smart Logger 3000ASMA FemaleSingle portHuawei's solar monitoring unit. Single SMA Female 4G modem port. Common at large commercial and utility solar farms.

Recommended D&G products for solar SCADA

All antennas cover Band 28 (700 MHz) for regional Australian Telstra/Optus coverage.

DG900MB-HG — 5GNR Broadband Omni

Standard outdoor antenna for solar SCADA sites. Covers Band 28 (700 MHz, Telstra regional), Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz). Connect to Teltonika RUT956/RUT986 or Robustel R5020 via SMA Male to N-Male pigtail. For high-signal metro-fringe sites: one antenna, single SMA Male cable.

DGY900-6 — Yagi Directional Antenna

For remote solar farms with a single nearby Telstra or Optus tower. 6–11 dBi directional gain pointed at the tower provides the link margin needed at sites where a standard omni delivers RSRP below -110 dBm. Mount on a pole above the inverter rows to clear metal structure interference.

SMA Male to N-Male Pigtail

Connects Teltonika RUT956/RUT986, Robustel R5020, Sungrow Logger1000, or Huawei Smart Logger 3000A SMA Female ports to D&G N-Female external antennas. 30 cm standard for short in-cabinet routing to antenna connector. For longer cable runs, follow with LMR400 N-Male to N-Male extension.

Custom LMR400 Cable Assembly

SMA Male at the modem end (Teltonika/Robustel/Sungrow), N-Male at the antenna end. LMR400 for runs up to 15 m from inverter room or comms enclosure to pole-mounted external antenna. Specify exact site measurement — no joins, full weatherproof assembly. Built from Penrith.

Common installation scenarios

Teltonika RUT956 at a regional solar farm — marginal Telstra coverage

Remote site, RSRP -108 dBm from the nearest Telstra Band 28 tower (typical at 15–25 km). SMA Male to N-Male LMR400 (8 m) from the RUT956's SMA port, up a 5 m steel pole above the inverter row, to an DGY900-6 Yagi pointed at the tower. Effective gain improvement: 8–10 dB, lifting RSRP to -98 to -100 dBm — well into stable data range for SCADA uplink.

Sungrow Logger1000 at commercial rooftop solar — metro fringe

Commercial building rooftop, inverter monitoring via Sungrow Logger1000 with cellular uplink. Single SMA Female port. SMA Male to N-Male LMR400 (5 m) routed up to the rooftop parapet, where an DG900MB-HG omni is wall-mounted in the clear. Away from the inverter structure, RSRP typically improves by 5–8 dB. One cable, one antenna, standard installation.

Robustel R5020 at utility-scale BESS — 5G MIMO

Battery energy storage site with Robustel R5020 5G router. Two SMA Female ports. Two matched SMA Male to N-Male LMR400 assemblies (same length) route to a MIMO dual-port omni at pole height. Both cellular paths receive identical signal at the antenna — MIMO throughput maximised. D&G supplies matched cable pair and dual-port antenna.

3G shutdown legacy SCADA upgrade

Pre-2024 solar sites still running 3G SCADA modems (Telstra 3G shut down October 2024) are now offline. Replacing with a Teltonika RUT956 requires: the router, two SMA Male to N-Male pigtails, and two external antennas. D&G can supply the complete antenna kit — omni pair or Yagi for directional sites — alongside the cable assemblies for a single-order upgrade.
