Remote IoT Monitoring
4G Antenna Australia

Remote water utilities, agricultural sensors, environmental monitors, and industrial SCADA sites across Australia share the same problem: marginal Telstra Band 28 coverage and metal enclosures that kill the built-in stub antenna. This guide covers the right D&G antenna and cable for every remote IoT monitoring scenario.

Remote monitoring sectors

Water & Wastewater Utilities

Senquip ORB, Robustel EV series, EDAC Guardian Detect, custom RTUs

Challenge: Pump stations and bores in regional areas — often the only building on the property, with marginal Telstra Band 28 coverage. Metal kiosks attenuate signal by 15–20 dB.

Solution: IP67 outdoor antenna pole-mounted above the kiosk, connected via LMR400 N-Male cable assembly to the modem inside.

Agricultural IoT (Farms)

Teltonika TRB145, Intercel 4G modems, Myriota satellite nodes, EnviroNode sensors

Challenge: Sheds, silos, and irrigations sites — flat terrain with line-of-sight to one carrier tower but no redundancy. 4G data logger must transmit reliably without on-site visits.

Solution: Yagi directional antenna on a 5 m pole, pointed at the nearest Telstra tower. LMR400 cable to the modem in the weatherproof enclosure.

Environmental Monitoring

EDAC Guardian Detect Elite 24+, Ceres Instrumentation, Campbell Scientific, custom NB-IoT nodes

Challenge: Weather stations, water quality loggers, and flood gauges at completely unattended remote sites — often below creek bank level or surrounded by vegetation.

Solution: High-mount antenna (5–10 m mast) above vegetation and terrain obstructions, connected via LMR400 to modem in sealed IP67 enclosure below.

Industrial & Mining SCADA

Robustel R5020, Moxa OnCell series, Westermo cellular routers

Challenge: Metal structures, inverter switching noise, and remote mine sites create a combination of high attenuation and marginal coverage. 3G modem replacement backlog from 2024 shutdown.

Solution: Yagi directional antenna for fringe-coverage mine sites, or omni for better-coverage industrial estates. LMR400 cable run from the control room to the exterior antenna.

Recommended D&G products for remote IoT

All antennas cover Band 28 (700 MHz) for regional Australian Telstra coverage.

DG900MB-HG — 5GNR Broadband Omni

Standard remote site antenna for Telstra or Optus 4G coverage. Covers Band 28 (700 MHz) for regional reach. N-Female port connects to SMA or N-type modem ports via the appropriate pigtail or cable assembly. IP67 for permanent outdoor pole or wall mount at unattended sites.

DGY900-6 — Yagi Directional Antenna

For remote sites with a single cell tower within line-of-sight. 6–11 dBi toward the tower recovers signal at sites where a standard omni delivers RSRP below -110 dBm. This is the standard antenna for pump stations, bores, and remote monitoring sites in regional AU where Telstra Band 28 is the only available signal.

SMA Male to N-Male Cable Assembly

For SMA Female modem ports (Teltonika RUT956/TRB145, Robustel R5020, EDAC Guardian Detect). LMR200 for short in-enclosure runs (up to 5 m). LMR400 for 5–15 m pole-top runs. Weatherproof N-Male to N-Female connection at antenna.

SMA Male → N Male, any length

N-Male to N-Male Cable Assembly

For N-Female modem or enclosure bulkhead connectors. LMR400 for long outdoor runs to pole-top antennas. Available in any length — specify site measurement. Standard lengths 5 m, 10 m, 15 m.

Freq

Connector
N-Male both ends, any length
