Gallagher SMB
External 4G Antenna

The Gallagher SMB cellular module uses a standard SMA Female antenna port for 4G communications. When the internal antenna isn't delivering reliable signal — metal cabinets, basement access points, fringe sites — this guide covers the right external antenna and cable for the Gallagher SMB.

About the Gallagher SMB Cellular Module

The Gallagher SMB (Small to Medium Business) security controller is widely deployed in Australian commercial premises for integrated access control, intruder detection, and building management. The optional cellular module adds 4G connectivity, providing the primary or backup communications path to monitoring stations and remote management platforms.

The SMB cellular module features an SMA Female external antenna port. The supplied stub antenna performs adequately in open environments, but attenuates significantly inside metal enclosures or shielded building structures — requiring an external antenna for reliable communications.

Common installation scenarios

Steel cabinet shielding

Gallagher SMB controllers are commonly installed in steel distribution boards or purpose-built metal enclosures. The enclosure walls attenuate the cellular signal by 15–25 dB — enough to cause supervision faults or monitoring failures. An external SMA antenna exiting the cabinet via a gland restores full signal.

Multi-site commercial access control

Gallagher SMB is frequently deployed across multi-site retail, franchise, and professional services premises. Cellular reliability is critical for remote door management and alarm response. An external antenna on each site eliminates location-dependent signal problems.

Basement and underground car park entry

Access control points in basement car parks and loading docks sit below street level where 4G penetration is poor. Route a low-loss coaxial from the Gallagher SMB controller through conduit to an external omni at ground level for reliable monitoring and remote access management.

Industrial premises and warehouses

Steel and concrete warehouse structures attenuate cellular signals significantly. A 6 dBi external omni mounted outside the structure — on an eave or roof parapet — provides the link margin required for uninterrupted access control and alarm communications.

Recommended D&G Products for Gallagher SMB

All antennas and cable assemblies individually tested. Custom cable assemblies quoted to site drawings.

DG900MB-HG — 5GNR Broadband Omni

Primary recommendation for Gallagher SMB cellular module installations. 6 dBi mid-band gain recovers signal in metal cabinets, basement plant rooms, and steel-framed buildings. Wall or pole bracket mount. Connect to the SMB cellular module SMA Female port via an SMA Male to N Male pigtail.

DGY900-6 — Yagi Directional Antenna

For remote commercial or rural sites with a known tower direction. 11 dBi at high-band LTE provides substantial link margin where standard antennas fail to hold a connection. Point toward nearest Telstra or Optus tower. Suited to outer-metro industrial premises and fringe rural commercial sites.

SMA Male to N Male Pigtail

Adapts the Gallagher SMB cellular module SMA Female port to the N Female port on D&G external antennas. 30 cm standard length — routes through the cabinet wall knockout or gland. Custom lengths available for installations requiring longer runs inside the enclosure.

Custom Cable Assembly

Low-loss LMR240 or LMR400 coaxial for cable runs through conduit, cable trays, and risers. Built to your site specification with SMA or N at each end. LMR400 recommended for runs over 10 m to keep insertion loss below 1 dB.

Why Gallagher installers specify D&G

100% tested, not sampled

Every antenna and cable assembly is tested on an Anritsu Site Master before dispatch. A bad antenna on a commercial access control site is a callback and a failed audit — we eliminate that risk at source.

OEM supplier to the monitoring industry

Our antennas are inside ADT, Johnson Controls, and Wormald monitoring infrastructure across Australia. The same build quality and test standard is in every product we supply to Gallagher installers.

Custom cable assemblies to any length

We build SMA and N connector cable assemblies in any length. LMR240 for standard runs, LMR400 for long cable paths where insertion loss is critical to maintaining signal margin.
