Australian 4G LTE
Frequency Band Reference
Australian 4G LTE networks span six frequency bands from 700 MHz to 2600 MHz. Choosing an antenna that covers all of them — in a single unit — means one SKU works across every carrier, every site, and every alarm panel or IoT device in the country.
700 MHz

1800 MHz
Band 3 — suburban
2600 MHz
Band 7 — urban
700–2700
Full coverage range
Band 28 at 700 MHz is the most important band for alarm installers
Band 28 (700 MHz APT) is Australia's primary rural and remote coverage band — used by Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. It penetrates buildings more effectively than higher bands. A failed alarm panel communicator on a fringe site almost always improves when an external antenna optimised for 700 MHz is installed.

700
Band 28
MHz (APT)
Coverage
Rural and remote — primary coverage band for outback Australia
Antenna selection
The most important band for rural installs. Penetrates buildings well. Any antenna rated 700–2700 MHz covers this band.
850
Band 5
MHz
Coverage
Telstra regional and semi-rural — complements Band 28 for Telstra-only areas
Antenna selection
Covered by any 700–2700 MHz rated antenna. Primarily Telstra; often co-deployed with Band 28 at rural towers.
1800
Band 3
MHz
Coverage
Suburban and urban — the primary mid-band for all three carriers
Antenna selection
High capacity mid-band. Covered by any 700–2700 MHz or 700–3800 MHz antenna. Used most heavily in suburban areas.
2100
Band 1
MHz
Coverage
Urban — high-capacity mid-band, largely replaced by Band 3 and Band 7 in metro areas
Antenna selection
Covered by any 700–2700 MHz antenna. Less prevalent than Band 3 in most installations.
2600
Band 7
MHz
Coverage
Dense urban — high-throughput short-range band in CBDs and shopping centres
Antenna selection
Requires 700–2700 MHz or wider antenna coverage. Not used for rural or remote installs — short range, low penetration.
2300
Band 40
MHz (TDD)
Coverage
Urban — Optus-specific TDD band for additional capacity in metro areas
Antenna selection
Covered by 700–3800 MHz antennas. An optional band for Optus subscribers in metro areas. Not a coverage band.
How to choose the right antenna frequency range
Rural and remote sites
Band 28 at 700 MHz is the primary band. Band 5 at 850 MHz is used by Telstra at many regional towers. An antenna rated 700–2700 MHz minimum, with solid 700–900 MHz performance, is the correct specification.
For fringe-coverage sites, gain matters more than frequency range. A D&G DGY900-6 Yagi at 6–11 dBi provides the link margin needed on weak 700 MHz signals.
Suburban and urban sites
Suburban sites primarily use Band 3 at 1800 MHz. A 3 dBi omni with flat 700–2700 MHz coverage is sufficient — gain matters less than coverage breadth at these sites.
Urban sites with shielded enclosures, basements, or metal plant rooms need an external antenna regardless of signal strength. The primary problem is enclosure shielding, not band coverage.
