How to Install
External 4G Antenna for Alarm Panel

Installing an external 4G antenna on an alarm panel communicator restores reliable back-to-base monitoring where the stub antenna is failing — in metal enclosures, basement plant rooms, and fringe signal sites. This guide covers the complete process in five steps.

Identify the antenna connector type on your communicator

Locate the cellular communicator module on your alarm panel. Look for the external antenna port — a small threaded coaxial connector. Most Australian alarm panels (Bosch CM746B, Inner Range T4000, RISCO LightSYS+, Hills Reliance XR, Ness D8X, Paradox EVO, Honeywell Galaxy Flex, Hikvision AX Pro) use SMA Female. DSC PowerSeries Neo LTE modules use RP-SMA Female (visually identical to SMA — check the module label). Centaur and Centair communicators use TNC Female (larger bayonet connector). Permaconn PM54 has dual SMA ports for MIMO.

Do not confuse SMA with RP-SMA — they look identical but have reversed center pins. Check the module label before ordering a pigtail.

Select the correct antenna for the site type

Choose antenna gain based on where the communicator is located. For urban and suburban sites in a metal enclosure or basement: D&G DG900MB-HG (3–6 dBi broadband omni, 600–7100 MHz) — the gain recovers the signal lost through the enclosure wall. For rural or fringe sites where 4G coverage is marginal: D&G DGY900-6 (6–11 dBi Yagi directional, 600–7100 MHz) — point toward the nearest tower for maximum link margin. For Permaconn PM54 or other dual-port MIMO communicators: D&G 2x DG900MB-HG (MIMO dual-port omni with two N-Jack pigtails).

Tools / materials

  • D&G DG900MB-HG broadband omni
  • D&G DGY900-6 Yagi (fringe sites)
  • D&G 2x DG900MB-HG MIMO (PM54/dual-port)

Choose the cable type and measure the cable run

Measure the distance from the communicator to the intended antenna mounting point. Use LMR200 coaxial for cable runs up to 5 metres — adequate for most plant room and comms room installations. Use LMR400 for cable runs of 5–15 metres where higher signal loss must be minimised. Avoid runs over 15 metres where possible — LMR400 loses approximately 0.65 dB per metre at 1800 MHz. The pigtail connector at the communicator end depends on the panel: SMA Male (most panels), RP-SMA Male (DSC Neo), or TNC Male (Centaur). The antenna end is N Male in all cases for D&G antennas.

Tools / materials

  • Tape measure
  • LMR200 or LMR400 cable
  • D&G custom cable assembly (built to length from Penrith)

Every metre of cable adds ~0.08 dB of loss at 700 MHz (LMR400) or ~0.22 dB at 700 MHz (LMR200). Keep runs as short as practical.

04

20–45 minutes

Route the cable and mount the antenna externally

Route the cable through conduit, cable tray, or core-drilled penetration from the communicator to the external mounting point. Seal all exterior penetrations with waterproof conduit fittings or self-amalgamating tape around the cable entry. Mount the antenna at the highest practical external location: exterior building wall, rooftop parapet, or external mast. For Yagi antennas on fringe sites, orient the antenna toward the nearest Telstra or Optus tower — confirm direction using the network provider's coverage checker or a cellular field tester. Maintain the antenna in a vertical (upright) orientation for omni antennas unless the installation space requires otherwise.

Tools / materials

  • Conduit fittings and waterproof sealant
  • Wall or mast mount bracket
  • Drill for core penetration

Ensure the external antenna mount is not within 1 metre of power cables. Metal enclosures, air conditioning units, and large metal structures close to the antenna reduce gain.

05

10 minutes

Connect the cable and test signal

Connect the pigtail at the communicator end to the module's antenna port — finger-tight plus a quarter turn. Do not over-torque SMA or RP-SMA connectors. Connect the N Male cable to the antenna's N Female port. Power the panel and wait for the communicator to register on the network — typically 30–60 seconds. Confirm the communicator shows a registered state in the panel software or via an LED indicator. If your panel software shows signal strength (RSRP or RSSI), compare against the pre-install reading to confirm improvement. RSRP above –100 dBm is adequate for reliable monitoring. RSRP above –80 dBm is excellent.

Tools / materials

  • Panel programming software or engineer handset
  • Cellular signal meter (optional)
